Roberto Martinez hails ‘special’ Romelu Lukaku as Everton forward strikes again

first_imgEverton manager Roberto Martinez believes striker Romelu Lukaku has proven he is a “special footballer” with his red-hot goalscoring form over the last 12 months. The Belgium international netted his 50th goal in 100 games for the Toffees to rescue a late 1-1 draw at home to Crystal Palace. His late goal, sweeping in at the back post from Gerard Deulofeu’s cross, was Lukaku’s 27th of 2015, and extended his current run of form to seven in his last six matches. The 22-year-old also hit the post in the first half and crashed a volley against the crossbar after the break before finally grabbing the goal his perseverance deserved.“Rom has been very consistent in the last 12 months, it is 26 or 27 goals in the calendar year – quite impressive,” Martinez said following the tie at Goodison Park.“When you look at the overall development in the last 12 months, it makes you realise what a special footballer we have.“It is not just talking about potential. We are talking about a goalscorer who can control the moment and see the importance of his role in the team.” Everton striker Romelu Lukaku celebrates 1last_img read more

Eagles boss hails Adebayor as one of top three players to have played for Palace – exclusive

first_imgSteve Parish has hailed Emmanuel Adebayor as one of the best two or three players to have ever played for Crystal Palace. The controversial Togolese striker has signed for the Eagles on a free transfer until the end of the season, having been released by Tottenham in September last year. And despite his reputation as a troublesome character who performs only in fits and starts, the Selhurst Park chairman insists there can be no doubts about his qualities.“We all know the pedigree of the player,” he said in an interview on the Sports Bar. “There are only two or three players with this pedigree that have played for Crystal Palace. We don’t sign too many players who have played for Real Madrid, Arsenal and Manchester City.“The quality is there and that’s why we’ve taken him. Hopefully he can give us something we’ve not had for a while – which is that little bit of X Factor.”Adebayor, 31, has not played a competitive match since May 2015, but has still been collecting £100,000 a week from Spurs. And Parish insists his return to the Premier League is all to do with football – and nothing at all to do with money. He added: “We’ve spoken to plenty of people who have been in and around him and we’ve had nothing but positive reports. He’s at that stage of his career where he’s playing because he loves the game and we’re not expecting any problems.“I’ve met him a couple of times and he seems like a really nice guy. We all start with a fresh sheet of paper and, if we get out of him what we’ve seen at other clubs, we’ll be very happy.“He could probably sit around and not play and be just as well off, with the way it’s worked out with his last club, so he’s playing because he wants to play football and wants to show people he can still do it. Everyone’s interests are aligned on that score and he had no demands at all. None. It was easy [to negotiate a deal].“He doesn’t have to play to make the same money, so there’s no question he wants to perform.”Parish also admits this may not be the last arrival at Palace before the close of the transfer window next Monday (February 1).“We’d like to get someone else in,” he added. “This one [Adebayor] takes the pressure off but there are a few more possible deals we’re involved in that we’d like to try to do.”last_img read more

Mark Hughes hints at late January signing as Stoke City exit the FA Cup

first_imgStoke manager Mark Hughes hinted at a late dip into the transfer market following the injury to Mark Wilson in Saturday’s FA Cup defeat to Crystal Palace.Wilfried Zaha scored the only goal of the game as the Potters were dumped out of their second cup competition of the week.Wilson left field with a ‘significant injury to his knee’ according to Hughes, leaving the Welshman light in terms of defensive cover.“You’re looking at a period of 10-12 weeks,” said Hughes.“He could be out for a significant amount of time so at the moment, given our defensive options and the guys that we have unavailable, we are a little bit light.“We might have to look at our options, maybe short term from now until the end of the season.“It’s not an area which we were looking to strengthen so we don’t know what is out there.“We hadn’t given that area the consideration it probably deserves now in the current circumstances.“You never know, but I’m sure once people realise that we might be a little bit shy of defensive numbers  I’m sure we will get a lot of calls between now and the window closing.”last_img read more

Lille chief confirms Premier League interest in Manchester United-linked Sofiane Boufal

first_img1 Sofiane Boufal Manchester United’s hopes of signing Sofiane Boufal this summer have been boosted after Lille revealed Juventus and Inter Milan have made no offers.?The attacking midfielder has shone in Ligue 1 this season and has six goals to his name so far.Juventus and Inter Milan have been tracking the 22-year-old since the summer, while French champions Paris Saint-Germain are also interested.Manchester United considered a January move for Boufal, but opted to wait until the summer. It was feared that delay could allow the likes of Juventus and Inter Milan to swoop in, but Lille’s sporting director Jean-Michel Vandamme says no bids have been made.“Inter and Juve have made no official offers so far,” said Vandamme.“They only probed with our intermediaries, the agents from Italy, Germany, Spain and England.“Boufal costs at least €20m, that’s the minimum. In January it was impossible for him to be sold. We’re not a club that sells in the winter window.“In June there’s a possibility that he may leave, though there are Premier League clubs after him too.“I think the Italian clubs had better beat that competition by negotiating now.”last_img read more
