Kolkata: An auto-rickshaw driver was killed in an accident at New Alipore on Tuesday night. A West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC) bus collided with the auto while taking a turn near the military camp at Alipore. Police seized both the vehicles involved in the accident. The bus driver managed to flee from the spot.According to locals, on Tuesday at around 9:30 pm, the auto-rickshaw driver identified as Sanjay Sarkar (45) was moving towards Taratala from New Alipore. Meanwhile, a WBTC bus was moving towards New Alipore at a high speed. Near a turn the bus collided with the auto head-on, wrecking it completely. He was immediately rushed to a private hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. Meanwhile, before locals could detain the bus driver, he managed to flee from the scene. It was alleged that the WBTC bus was racing with another bus but on-duty police personnel said they had not seen the same. However, police were sure that the bus was running at a high speed and tried to take the turn without reducing the speed. Sources informed that the driver was detained later. Protesting against the rash driving of the state-run bus, auto drivers of the route suspended their service on Wednesday. 17 other auto routes in and around the area also decided to suspend service. As a result, daily commuters faced immense trouble reaching their destinations. According to police sources, sleuths are checking the CCTV camera footage from the New Alipore area to make sure how the accident occurred.
