Credit to our guys for handling that pressure after falling behind and being able to steal the win in the end,” Drake head coach Davidson Kozlowski said. The Hawkeyes managed to come out in front of a rowdy Bulldog crowd and win the doubles point, taking courts one and three. The Bulldogs didn’t allow Iowa to take its momentum from doubles into singles, as DU’s senior Ben Lott and sophomore Ben Stride earned straight set wins to give Drake a 2-1 lead. Lott defeated Dominic Patrick 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 1 spot, while Stride beat Jonas Larsen 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5.”We had great results from Lott on court one and Stride on court five, as they neutralized that momentum from dropping the doubles point,” Kozlowski said. The Hawkeyes tied it up at two with a win at No. 6 and took a 3-2 lead when Lefteris Theodorou defeated Bayo Philips, 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 at No. 2.Sophomore Calum MacGeoch overcame a tough tiebreaker loss in the first set to beat Robin Haden 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 to tie the match up at three apiece.Freshman Vinny Gillespie took his first set 7-5, but Iowa’s Josh Silverstein put the match into a third and decisive set with a 6-2 second set win. Gillespie came out and won the first two games in the third set. Silverstein came back to win the next four games to take a 4-2 lead. Gillespie recuperated himself and earned a break and held his serve to go up 5-4, before breaking for the match, 6-4, and securing match point for the Bulldogs.”Vinny has been in that positions several times and he has handled that situation better and better as the season has worn on,” Kozlowski said about the decisive match point coming down to Gillespie.Drake has a quick turnaround as it hosts Michigan State on Saturday at 6 p.m. and then No. 65 Cornell on Sunday at 11 a.m. to wrap up the weekend.#36 Drake 4, #33 Iowa 3Mar 04, 2016 at Des Moines, Iowa (Roger Knapp Tennis Center) Singles competition1.
